Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II is the legacy pick on this list, and it still hits harder than games released half a decade after it. BJ Blazkowicz is one of the angriest protagonists in gaming, and the alt-history premise, a Nazi-occupied America, gives every level a specific kind of dread that generic sci-fi settings don't manage. I finished the campaign in a single extended weekend, which is rare for me these days. Replay value is the issue. Once you've seen the story, there's not much reason to go back, and content depth feels thinner than newer catalog entries. If you want a punchy, story-driven single-player FPS and don't mind that it's a few years old, this is still worth the download.

Wolfenstein II is a cinematic single-player campaign that commits fully to its story in a way most shooters do not bother with, and that actually makes it suit handheld play better than you might expect. Each chapter has a clear beginning and end. The shooting is tight and satisfying, the dual-wielding feels good under a controller, and you never have to wonder what you are doing or where you are supposed to go. I ranked it ninth rather than higher because the replay value is modest once the campaign is done, and the campaign itself is not especially long. But as a clean solo FPS pickup for the Deck, it is one of the most underrated options on this entire list.
