MADiSON

MADiSON is a nasty little psychological horror game built around a cursed Polaroid camera that develops photos revealing things the room doesn't actually show. It leans hard into shock imagery rather than slow-burn dread, which makes it a rougher, more immediate experience than most of what's ranked above it. I played it in one longer evening session rather than my usual short bursts, mostly because I didn't want to stop halfway through a puzzle with the lights off. The Switch version is serviceable rather than sharp, with occasional dips that keep it out of the main ten. If modern shock horror is what you're after, this delivers it without much patience required.

MADiSON got a genuine yell out of me during the darkroom photo-development sequence, and I don't say that about many horror games anymore. It got me good. It's a first-person haunted-house game built almost entirely around a camera mechanic that forces you to look at things you'd rather not, then wait while the photo slowly develops in your hands. The scares are deliberately old-fashioned: lights, sound, a demon child who shows up exactly when you've let your guard down. Production values are modest next to the AAA names higher on this list. If pure fear factor is what you're after, though, few PS5 games deliver it this directly.
