Reanimal is the newest game on this list and the one closest in spirit to It Takes Two, if It Takes Two had been written by someone with a much darker imagination. Two siblings, one nightmare realm. The co-op puzzles depend on genuine cooperation rather than one player carrying the other. The horror here is atmospheric and unsettling rather than jump-scare driven, closer to a bad dream than a haunted house. I haven't logged nearly as many hours in this as the games above it, mostly because it's still finding its Xbox audience and reliability lags a step behind the established picks. Worth watching, and worth playing now if cinematic co-op horror is what you're after.

REANIMAL comes from the studio behind Little Nightmares, which means the visual language is already unsettling before a single creature appears. The 2026 release builds on that pedigree with a co-op structure built for exactly two players, no more. You cannot pad this one with a full squad. It demands a dedicated partner and a willingness to sit with genuine dread at a slow pace. I gravitate toward story-driven games where the atmosphere does as much work as the mechanics, and this is one of the few recent horror releases that commits to that fully. Lower replayability compared to the session-based games above it, but for a single focused playthrough with the right person, it is one of the most atmospheric co-op horror experiences of the year.
Tarsier Studios built Little Nightmares, so when they released Reanimal as a two-player horror co-op in February 2026, I went in with high expectations for the atmosphere. They were met. The creature design is genuinely unsettling in the way the best Little Nightmares moments are: things that are almost familiar but deeply wrong. Two players only, online or local, and the teamwork is woven into traversal and puzzle-solving rather than combat. It does not overstay its welcome. No crossplay yet, which is a practical limitation if your co-op partner is on PC, but for an Xbox duo looking for pure horror atmosphere this is the strongest 2026 addition to the list.
