I would rather play a mediocre game with friends than a great one alone, and Game Pass makes that easy to act on. The catch is that the catalogue is full of multiplayer modes nobody opens twice. This list covers the ones worth installing, split across co-op, competitive, and social play, so you can find something for Friday night without scrolling for an hour first.
We scored each game on multiplayer quality, group usability, Game Pass value, active player support, and variety. Multiplayer quality carried the most weight, and variety the least.

Quick Picks
Five games that cover very different kinds of group night.
Best for crews who want stories: Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition
Best for mixed-age groups: Minecraft
Best for a regular squad: Deep Rock Galactic
Best for competitive shooter fans: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Best for big groups: 33 Immortals
The Top 10 Multiplayer Games on Game Pass
Ten picks, ranked, spanning pirate crews, mining squads, shooters, and sandboxes.
Someone in my crew always ends up steering us into a rock while the rest of us argue over the map. That is Sea of Thieves, and it is why it sits at number one. Co-op and PvP are not separate modes here. Your crew sails together, digs up treasure and tries to hand it in, while other crews decide whether you get to. Nothing else on Game Pass produces stories like that over a single evening. The first hour is rough, since the game explains little and sailing is slow until everyone knows a role. Push through it. A galleon with four friends on headsets is hard to beat.

I play this with my eldest and with my friends, and it works for both without changing a thing. That range is the whole case. A kid who has never touched a survival game and an adult who builds redstone contraptions can share a world and both be useful. It is not the most exciting pick on this list, because everyone already knows it. Multiplayer is also not where Minecraft is deepest, since nobody hands you a goal and a group can drift. Someone has to say let us build a castle. On Game Pass it is included on console and PC, so starting costs nothing extra.

After a little too much Helldivers 2, this has become one of my group's favourites. Same squad energy, shorter sessions. Driller, Gunner, Engineer and Scout each do something the others cannot, and a team without a Scout finds out how dark a cave gets. Runs take about half an hour, which fits a weeknight. The ping system means you can coordinate without constant chatter. It is purely co-op with no PvP, so it adds less variety than the sandboxes above it. Give it three or four runs before the class tools click.

I have been a Call of Duty diehard since day one, and I still finish the campaign before going online. Black Ops 6 rewards the habit. Omnimovement lets you slide, dive and sprint in any direction, and I am not sure how realistic that is. It is fun, and that is enough. For a friend group the draw is rotating between multiplayer and Zombies, which gives you a round-based co-op break when the lobbies get sweaty. They do get sweaty. Skill-based matchmaking will flatten a casual friend, and the install is enormous. Still the best pure shooter on the service.

Every other game on this list asks the group to want the same thing. Dead by Daylight does not. One player is the killer, four are survivors repairing generators and trying not to be noticed, and the tension comes from that mismatch. I queue as a full survivor group on headsets, because solo queue without voice is a lonelier, less forgiving game. It trades aim duels for dread, which makes it a good pick for friends who dislike shooters. The killer side is steeper to learn, the perk lists are overwhelming at first, and a few matches will feel unfair.

I found this one by accident and it surprised me. It feels like Diablo, but lighter, and for someone who never finished Diablo IV that is a compliment. It comes from the studio behind Spiritfarer, and it is a co-op action roguelike where squads far bigger than four push through runs together. The scale gives it a different rhythm from every other pick here. With a crowd on screen things get hard to read, and the community is smaller than the big names above. Still, a few runs with a large group is time well spent.

No Man's Sky is where I go when I want company without stakes. You and a friend land on a planet, build a base, and wander off to do your own thing, then compare finds over voice chat. That is parallel play more than teamwork, which is why it sits at seven and not higher. The crafting and inventory menus are a chore for the first few hours. Past that, the worlds are vivid and the pace is entirely yours. A long evening with nobody shouting. Years of updates have kept it feeling current.

Gears 5 is the campaign I hand to a friend who claims not to like shooters. Three-player co-op through a story with proper set pieces, and on my S95F it looks better than a 2019 game should, though a QD-OLED flatters everything. Horde mode, where up to five of you hold a position against waves, is the reason to stay afterwards. Versus is the shakier side, so check that the playlists are busy at your usual hours before building a night around them. It is also the third shooter on this list, which is why it lands at eight.

The multiplayer in Halo Infinite is free to play, so what Game Pass really adds is the campaign and its co-op. Worth knowing before you count it as a perk. What you get is a clean arena shooter, Big Team Battle with vehicles and wide maps, and a custom games browser where friends can set their own rules. I drift back for a few rounds when I want a shooter without the sweat of Call of Duty. It feels like a settled game now, not a growing one. Reliable, not essential.

I have been driving through Forza games on Xbox for years, so I had to include this one. Convoys let a group cruise the roads of Japan, hop between events and regroup whenever the open lobby gets busy, and racers always do well with friends. Multiplayer is not the main reason to install it, though. The bigger catch is availability. On Game Pass it is currently a PC title, with no console listing. I also would not expect it to run on the modest laptops my LAN group brings. That is why it closes the list.

Honorable Mentions
These five narrowly missed the cut, usually because they ask more of a group or cover ground a higher pick already holds.
I started Diablo IV and never finished it, which says plenty about how I handle long loot grinds with limited evenings. Even so, party dungeon runs and shared-world events give groups a real reason to log in together, and Game Pass makes the entry cost zero. It missed the top 10 because it is more hybrid than the picks above, with a lot of solo setup before group play pays off. 33 Immortals scratches a similar itch with less commitment. If your friends already love loot treadmills, it is a solid install.
12. Rematch
81%I have spent more couch hours on EA FC than I would like to admit, so a football game where you control a single player felt like a fresh angle. REMATCH is arcade football in third person, with team matches and a sports lane this list otherwise lacks. Positioning matters, and one teammate hogging the ball loses games fast. It missed the top 10 because its player pool and depth sit below the shooters above. Quick sessions are its strength. If your group is tired of guns, put it on your install list.
Medieval settings are a weakness of mine, so I wanted this to rank higher. Chivalry 2 drops you into large objective battles where friends charge a castle gate together and half of them die laughing. Swings are directional, so the first few matches are humbling. It missed the top 10 because the player pool is smaller than the big shooters and the learning curve punishes drop-in friends. Still a fine counterweight to modern military shooters. Bring friends who laugh when they lose.
I cannot commit a hundred hours to anything, so I treat The Elder Scrolls Online as a place to visit rather than live in. Queuing for a group dungeon with a friend and then arguing about who pulled the boss is a proper night out, and Cyrodiil PvP adds large-scale conflict. It missed the top 10 because onboarding is heavy, with skills, menus and zones to learn before a group clicks. For MMO friends it is the long-term pick. Two free evenings a week? Start somewhere lighter.
15. Palworld
79%Pokémon with guns is the joke, but the actual game is a survival crafting sandbox built around a shared base. I reach for Pokopia on the Switch 2 when I want that loop gentle, and Palworld is the rougher, noisier version for a group with a long evening. It missed the top 10 because setup friction is higher, with hosting and base management to sort out before anyone is having fun. Patience required. Bring a friend who enjoys logistics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions friends ask before everyone downloads the same thing.
Do my friends need Game Pass to play with me?
Usually yes. Each player needs their own access to the game, through Game Pass or a purchase. The exception is free-to-play multiplayer such as Halo Infinite, where anyone can join without a subscription.
Does online multiplayer on console need a specific Game Pass tier?
On console, online play in most paid games needs a tier that includes it, and the catalogue differs by tier. Check the Game Pass page for your tier before planning a session. Libraries rotate, so confirm a game is still listed too.
Does cross-play work between consoles and PC?
Several games here support it, including Minecraft (Bedrock), Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Halo Infinite. Settings vary per game, so check which version your friend owns before assuming it works.
What is the best pick for a group with mixed ages and skill levels?
Minecraft. Controls need almost no explanation and a private world means nobody gets left behind. I play it with my eldest and it works just as well with adult friends. No Man's Sky is the calmer alternative, though its menus take a few hours to learn.
Can I play any of these on the same couch?
On console, Minecraft and Gears 5 both support split-screen. Most of the rest are online-first, so plan for separate screens. If a couch session is your main goal, start with those two.
Conclusion
Multiplayer on Game Pass runs from pirate crews and mining squads to sweaty shooters, giant roguelike runs and a calm space sandbox. Different groups will want different things. Minecraft and No Man's Sky suit mixed ages and low pressure, Sea of Thieves and Deep Rock Galactic reward a regular crew, and Black Ops 6 handles the competitive itch. Pick one, bring friends, and give it three sessions before deciding whether it sticks.
