Aim at the legs. That is the first lesson Dead Space teaches, and the necromorphs make sure you remember it. Cutting limbs off with the plasma cutter instead of going for the head is a small twist, but it turns every fight into a quick maths problem when your ammo is thin and something is skittering in the vents. I played the remake on the Series X and the QD-OLED flatters it, but the lighting design does the real work: flickering lights, deep shadow, nothing ever fully visible. It is also slower and more methodical than the Resident Evil games. That is a strength if you like sustained dread.

This game features graphic violence, including sight of human characters being dismembered and decapitated, with accompanying blood effects. In one sequence, a character stabs another character and then cuts down his body, resulting in sight of gory injury and blood. The attacking character then takes her life by cutting her own throat using a knife. The game also includes use of strong language ('fuck'). The game includes horror images, including sight of mutilated corpses, and multiple scenes in which the player's character is hunted by monsters through dark environments.

I leave DualSense haptics on by default, and Dead Space is one of the few horror games that actually earns it. The controller trembles with the Ishimura's dying systems long before a Necromorph drops out of a vent, and that low rumble does more for tension than most jump scares manage alone. Dismemberment combat still works because severing a limb changes how the fight plays out, not just how gory it looks. The scares hold up. It's a remake that respects the original's pacing instead of padding it out, and on PS5 it's simply the best way to experience this game today.
I played this back to back with Resident Evil 4 on Xbox and came away convinced the platform has quietly become one of the better places for horror remakes right now. The Ishimura is a genuinely oppressive setting, tight corridors, flickering lights, and the necromorph dismemberment system that forces you to actually think about where you're shooting instead of just holding the trigger. It's shorter than RE4. It's also less varied in its pacing, which is the real reason it landed here instead of the main ten. Still, if you want a second horror pick after finishing that one, this is the obvious next stop.
Dead Space belongs here despite having the weakest survival purity score in the top ten, and that qualifier matters. Isaac Clarke is more capable than the other protagonists on this list, which is worth knowing before you start. The Ishimura is still a masterclass in oppressive environmental design, the diegetic interface and total absence of cut-away menus keeping you locked in the ship's horror at all times. Limb-based dismemberment gives combat a puzzle quality that keeps tension present even when you are winning. The 2023 remake sharpened an already strong experience. If your first instinct is Dead Space, that instinct is correct. Just know it is the most action-forward entry here.
What the Dead Space remake gets right that a lot of action-leaning horror games miss is that the ship itself is the horror. The USG Ishimura is not a backdrop. It is a character, one that is hostile, claustrophobic, and structured so that you never quite feel oriented. Dismemberment combat is satisfying in a way that sounds wrong to say out loud, but it matters because cutting a limb gives you control that the rest of the game refuses to offer. I went in expecting a polished sci-fi shooter and spent most of it breathing too fast. The 2023 remake is simply the best way this game has ever been playable, and it is very much worth your time.
