About Demon's Souls

Entirely rebuilt from the ground up and masterfully enhanced, Demon's Souls is a remake of the 2009 release that introduces the horrors of a fog-laden, dark fantasy land to a whole new generation of gamers. Those who’ve faced its trials and tribulations before, can once again challenge the darkness in stunning visual quality with incredible performance. The remake features improved graphics and animations, sound and lighting tweaks and a reimagining of many of the visual, musical and mechanical aspects of the original game.

Story setup

Demon's Souls is set in a fictional dark fantasy world, taking part mostly in the southern medieval kingdom of Boletaria, that has been consumed by a thick, mysterious Fog that is creeping ever out to blanket the entire world. The Old One, a colossal immortal flying Demon, has been awoken and with it Demons have come forth to consume the souls of men. Only when The Old One is lulled back to eternal slumber will the fog dissipate and the world be restored.

Violence is inflicted using a variety of weapons, such as swords, with which human and demonic characters may be beaten and slashed. Impacts result in sight of blood and injury detail, with corpses seen lying on the ground afterwards. Sometimes characters groan in pain when hit. Fireballs can be thrown at humans, causing them to burst into flames and fall to the ground. In one cinematic scene, a human-like character is impaled on the blade of a sword and is hoisted into the air. Gurgling sounds are heard as the character is lifted up and them bleeds out.

Best PS5 Exclusives

Demon's Souls launched alongside the PS5 and still looks like nothing else on the platform. Bluepoint rebuilt it from the ground up and the result is a game that genuinely earns comparison to the most visually accomplished things Sony has released. I am not deep into soulslike games by default, I do not have the patience for extended punishment loops, but even I spent time in Boletaria just taking in what Bluepoint achieved technically. The combat is demanding and the world design is deliberate and unforgiving. If you own a PS5 and have ever been curious about the genre, this is the purest version of that curiosity on the platform. Console-exclusive. Looks extraordinary. Still essential.
