Tormented Souls wears its Resident Evil and Silent Hill influences openly, right down to fixed camera angles and an ink-ribbon-style save system. I appreciated it more as a student of the genre than as someone looking to get scared. The puzzles are the draw. They're dense and occasionally obtuse in that classic PS1 way, the kind that sends you back to reread a note three rooms away. It's a smaller production than anything in the main ten, and the animation and voice work show it. Still, for players who grew up on the genre's early years, this earns a real look.

Graphic violence includes a disturbing scene in which a creature is seen eating the face of a human who is lying on a table. The person twitches and groans before falling still. There is sight of gore, with gruesome sound effects. Violence during gameplay involves the player's character fending off attacking creatures who bite and slash at her. The creatures can be attacked with a variety of weapons, including a shotgun and a nail gun. The creatures flinch and groan before eventually falling to the ground. Blood effects appear when the creatures are attacked. The player's character can be killed, with the creatures snapping her neck and shaking her lifeless body. More realistic violence occurs in cinematic scenes, including a woman being knocked unconscious by a blow to the head, a man slashing his wrists to obtain blood for a sacrifice, and a drill being dropped onto the head of a creature, causing a spray of blood.

Tormented Souls is the kind of game that almost no one knows exists and almost everyone who finds it enjoys. It is a modern game built around fixed-camera angles, ink ribbon saves, and a mansion-hospital setting that borrows freely from the 1996-2003 era of survival horror without feeling like a knockoff. The atmosphere is uneven in places and the production values show a small team working at the edge of its budget. Still, the genre understanding behind it is real. If you have cleared the top ten and want something smaller that plays by the same rules, this is where to look.
