Most of my weeknight gaming is single player, because I can boot it up, play for forty minutes, and stop without letting anyone down. That also means I have spent too many evenings scrolling the Game Pass catalogue instead of playing anything. This list is the shortcut I wanted. Every game here works alone, is on the service right now, and earns its place by being worth an evening, whether that is a half-hour run or a hundred-hour commitment.

This article focuses on single-player only. If you are looking for more Game-Pass recommendations check out our full Best Games on Game Pass Guide.

Quick Picks

The Top 10 Best Single Player Games on Game Pass

Ten games, ranked for the person with one free evening and no interest in a group chat.

My rule for weeknight games is simple. I need to be able to stop whenever a kid needs something or my eyes give up. Hades II fits that as well as anything on this list, because a run lasts about half an hour and even a failed one hands you something to spend. You play Melinoë, fighting up from the Underworld with a weapon you choose, and each boon from the gods changes how that weapon behaves. The combat is fast, readable, and generous with dodges. It is also a lot to take in early, with menus and currencies stacking up before you know what they do.

A hundred hours is a number I normally walk away from. Persona 5 Royal talked me round because the game is cut into in-game days, and each day is a natural place to put the controller down. You spend afternoons building friendships and evenings clearing Palaces, which are dungeons shaped by a villain's warped desires. The turn-based combat is stylish enough that menus feel like a performance. Be warned, though. The opening several hours are mostly dialogue, and if you want action in the first evening, it will test you. That slow start is the only reason it sits behind Hades II. After that, the payoff is huge.

My wife glanced at the screen, saw cards and a growing pile of chips, and asked if I was gambling. Not quite. Balatro takes poker hands and turns them into a roguelike, where Joker cards bend the scoring rules until a pair of twos is suddenly worth millions. A run takes 20 to 40 minutes, which means one more is always on the table. The first hour is the rough part, because the scoring maths only makes sense once you have lost a few times. There is no story and no world to wander. That keeps it off the top spot. On a tired Tuesday, though, it is the one I open first.

Each year the Paintress wakes, paints a number on her monolith, and everyone of that age disappears. Expedition 33 sets out to stop her before the next number catches up with them. I went in expecting a pretty RPG and ended up wanting one more chapter every night, because this is a story that has something to say and does not waste it. Combat is turn-based but asks you to dodge and parry in real time. The timing takes a while to click. Difficulty options soften the early hours. At 30 to 50 hours, it asks for more commitment than Balatro or Hades II, which is why it sits fourth.

Best Cozy Games on Game Pass 2026

Ghost of Tsushima worked on me because the setting was real, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II does the same thing in 1403 Bohemia. Henry is a blacksmith's son, not a chosen one, so he starts out bad at nearly everything. Sword fights are slow and deliberate. I lost my first proper duel after walking in confident, which is the game's way of teaching respect. After Valhalla, I am wary of enormous maps, but here the quests respond to how you tackle them, and the countryside is worth the walk. It asks you to learn its systems before it gives much back, which is why it lands fifth and not higher.

The Prince of Persia I know best is the PS2 one, played with a friend, passing the controller back every time somebody fell off a wall. The Lost Crown is a very different game, a 2D metroidvania starring Sargon, but the acrobatics still feel good in the hands. Combat is quick, with parries that reward timing, and the map is full of ledges you cannot reach yet. A neat touch is the screenshot feature, which lets you pin an image of an unreachable spot to the map as a reminder. At 20 to 30 hours, you can actually finish it. Late backtracking can drag.

Cyberpunk 2077 launched broken in December 2020, and plenty of people wrote it off for good. That verdict is out of date. After years of patches, Night City is dense, loud, and gorgeous, and on my S95F the neon and rain look exceptional, though a good OLED flatters anything. V's story with Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves, carries the campaign, and side gigs often tell small, sharp stories of their own. The map is still cluttered with icons, and the odd bug survives. I skip most of the collectables and lose nothing.

Death Stranding is the only game on this list I would hand over with a warning. You are Sam Porter Bridges, a courier walking across a ruined America with too much cargo, and the first few hours are mostly that: walking, balancing weight, and learning that a slope is a decision. I nearly bounced around hour three. It is slow on purpose. Then the story, the music, and the strange loneliness start working on you. It does have online features, but they are asynchronous. Other players' ladders and bridges simply appear in your world, and nobody ever joins or interrupts you. Nothing else on Game Pass feels like it.

A finished game feels good, and Psychonauts 2 is the shortest campaign on this list. It runs 12 to 18 hours across levels set inside people's minds, so a single evening usually covers a whole idea. Raz enters a head, and the game turns an obsession or a regret into a place you jump around in. The writing is jokey and kind in equal measure. Platforming is a little floaty and combat is the weak part. I played it in short evening bursts over about a week and actually saw the credits, which is not something I can say about most of my backlog.

Uncharted and Tomb Raider are part of why I play games at all, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the nearest thing to them on Game Pass. It is a first-person 1937 adventure with Troy Baker doing a convincing Harrison Ford, and it moves from the Vatican to Giza with a whip, your fists, and whatever is lying nearby, frying pans included. The set pieces and puzzles keep the 15 to 25 hours moving. Stealth is serviceable rather than clever. It does not reinvent anything, which is why it closes the list. On a weeknight, that is plenty.

Honorable Mentions

These five came close. Each one lost out to a pick above it on length, variety, or how much energy it asks for.

Infinite Wealth has a monster-collecting minigame called Sujimon, a Pokémon-style parody, and I put more evenings into it than I planned to. That tells you what sort of game this is. Ichiban Kasuga's story runs from Yokohama to Honolulu, heartfelt and daft in equal parts, with turn-based fights built around job classes. Dondoko Island, an island-building side game in the Animal Crossing mould, is where I stopped pretending to be efficient. It missed the top 10 because 60 hours is a big ask and Persona 5 Royal and Clair Obscur already cover turn-based RPGs. Still huge value if you want a warm, long JRPG.

Castle Dimitrescu is the reason to play Resident Evil Village. It is tall, tense, and properly creepy, and I played that whole section in one sitting with the lights off. Donna Beneviento's house is the other high point. After that, the game leans steadily towards action, and by the final stretch you are shooting more than hiding. At 10 to 15 hours it fits a long weekend, and it missed the top 10 because the dread fades as the guns get bigger. Still the best short horror pick on the service if you want one.

I walked out of the opening sewers into Cyrodiil's green hills and stood there for a good minute, which tells you the remaster did its job. The visuals are modern, the world is huge, and the Dark Brotherhood questline is still one of the best things Bethesda has written. Dialogue and faces show their age, though, and the quest structure is looser than anything in the top 10. That is why it missed the list. If you want a fantasy world you can leave for a week and return to without losing the thread, it works.

I would rank Control higher if its map were not a maze. Jesse Faden walks the Oldest House, a government building whose office corridors rearrange themselves, and you tear chunks out of the walls and throw them at enemies. The Ashtray Maze sequence, with its pounding metal track, is the section I keep describing to friends. Twelve to twenty hours is a good length, and the Ultimate Edition bundles the expansions. I got lost often enough that the map cost it a place in the top 10. Weird sci-fi fans will forgive it.

I kept a notepad beside the couch for Blue Prince, which is not something I say about many games. You explore a shifting mansion, drafting rooms from a choice of three each time you open a door, with a limited number of steps per day. Each day is a short run, so it suits a weeknight. Some answers take many days to uncover. It missed the top 10 because it needs a clear head, and I have had evenings where it was simply too much. Not a switch-off game. Keep it for nights with spare energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few things readers ask before they commit to a download.

Are all ten games still on Game Pass?

All ten were available at the time of writing. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Cyberpunk 2077 are on console and PC but not cloud streaming, so check that if you play on a phone or handheld. Catalogues rotate, so look at the game's Game Pass page before you download.

What should I play if I only have 30 minutes?

Balatro and Hades II both fit. A run of either takes roughly half an hour, and neither punishes you for stopping afterwards. I reach for them on nights when I already know I will be tired.

Death Stranding has online features. Is it really single player?

Yes. The core game is entirely solo. The online side is asynchronous, which means you see ladders and bridges other players have built but never play alongside anyone.

Which of these can I finish in under 20 hours?

Psychonauts 2 at 12 to 18 hours is the safest bet. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at 15 to 25 hours and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown at 20 to 30 hours sit close behind. Resident Evil Village from the honorable mentions is shorter still.

Do I need a particular Game Pass tier?

Availability varies by tier and platform, so check each game's page. I held Game Pass Premium for a long time and have recently moved up to Ultimate, so I would not claim to know every tier's lineup, and those lineups change.

Conclusion

If you want a short answer, start with Balatro if you have thirty minutes, Clair Obscur if you want a story that sticks, and Hades II if you want something you will still be playing in three months. Everything else on this list serves a different mood, from Psychonauts 2 and its finishable week to Persona 5 Royal and its hundred-hour commitment. Game Pass libraries rotate, so check that a game is still on the service before you download.
