Fantasy is my favourite genre, and Oblivion Remastered is the game where I plan a route and immediately abandon it. A cave on the horizon, a guild notice, a stranger asking for help with a ruined shrine. Cyrodiil rewards that kind of drifting. It sits behind the newer worlds because it plays like a game from 2006 wearing a very good coat. Conversations are stiff, the levelling system is awkward, and combat is not the reason to stay. The wandering is. Install it when you want a fantasy map with no pressure and several guild questlines to fall into.

Oblivion was the game that got a lot of my friends into Elder Scrolls in the first place, so the remaster felt like visiting a childhood house with new windows fitted. The bones are the same. Cyrodiil is smaller and more compact than Skyrim's map, but the guild questlines still hold up, and the odd AI quirks that made the original charming are still in there if you look. It's a real visual jump, running smoothly on Series X, and it's the easiest entry point if you skipped the 2006 original. Won't replace Skyrim for most people. Still a genuinely good way to spend a few evenings in this universe.
This remaster surprised me. I went in expecting a polished nostalgia trip and came out thinking it actually belongs on a 2026 recommendation list on its own merits. The guild questlines here, the Thieves Guild especially, have a narrative tightness that Skyrim never quite matched. The attribute and skill systems are more involved than Skyrim's, which makes levelling feel more deliberate. Visually the remaster is not flawless, but it is a genuine improvement and makes a 2006 game genuinely comfortable to play today. It sits below Skyrim in the ranking because it is the harder sell to someone brand new to the series, but for anyone who already loves Skyrim and wants more of the same formula with different flavour, this is exactly that.
