Hogwarts Legacy

I grew up on the Harry Potter books and films, so walking through Hogwarts' halls for the first time in this game hit a spot none of the mechanics deserve credit for. Objectively, Hogwarts Legacy doesn't excel at any single thing. The combat is fine, the open-world side content is fairly generic collect-and-fetch stuff, and the story won't surprise anyone. None of that mattered much to me. Just being in that castle, recognising a corridor from the films, was worth the price on its own. The Highlands beyond the school are pretty but thinner on things to actually do. If you have any nostalgia for this world, it delivers exactly the feeling you're hoping for.

Being a Harry Potter fan meant this one could not really go wrong for me, and it did not disappoint. Just walking around Hogwarts and exploring the grounds was enough to justify the download. The open world is warm and dense with detail, the progression feels clear from the start, and it is one of the most genuinely approachable open-world RPGs on the service for players who do not usually reach for that genre. It sits outside the top ten because the combat and quest design never quite match the world design, but the atmosphere carries it further than it has any right to go on that alone.

My wife watched me play the opening section of Hogwarts Legacy and asked to take the controller. She does not play games. The castle is that convincing. Every corridor has something in it, the secret rooms, the moving staircases, the classes that actually teach you spells before you use them in combat. The open world surrounding Hogwarts is competent rather than exceptional, and the combat system will not surprise anyone who has played an action RPG before. But the atmosphere carries enormous weight here. For someone coming to this purely as a Harry Potter fan, or for a subscriber who wants a fantasy world that holds your hand just enough without being condescending, this is exactly right.

I played Hogwarts Legacy around Christmas, which turned out to be the right call. The seasonal scenery updates kept the grounds looking like December, and wandering through Hogsmeade in the snow while the world looked exactly like how you imagined it growing up is a specific kind of pleasure. I am enough of a fan that the atmosphere carried me through parts where the RPG mechanics felt thin. That is the honest trade: the brand does a lot of work here, and the underlying open-world structure is functional rather than outstanding. For Harry Potter fans, it is comfort food with production values. For everyone else, the main list offers more distinctive options.
