Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of my all-time favourites, and not because anything exciting happens most of the time. Nothing happens most of the time, and that's the whole point. You ride through the mountains at dusk, a stranger asks for help with a wagon wheel, and forty minutes later you are burying a man you just met in a snowstorm. That is the kind of world Rockstar built here, one that keeps going whether you're watching or not. It shows its age now: load times are longer than current-gen owners are used to, and the pacing in the opening hours tests patience. Doesn't matter. Nothing else on Xbox simulates a living world this convincingly, and probably nothing will for a while.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of my favourites, full stop. It's the game I'd point to first if someone asked what an alive open world feels like. I've lost entire evenings just walking through the mountains, not doing anything, just letting Arthur trudge through snow while the camera drifts. It's not PS5-native though, no current-gen patch means load times and resolution sit below what this hardware could actually do. That's the one real mark against it here. Nothing else on this list matches its weather, wildlife, and towns that keep existing whether you're watching or not, which is why it still ranks this high despite the technical gap.

There are games with bigger maps and games with more missions. None of them feel like places the way Red Dead Redemption 2 does. I lost entire evenings just riding through the Grizzlies watching weather systems change overhead. The story is slow by design, and that is the honest warning: this game is not in a hurry and it will not apologise for it. If you can match its pace, the payoff is unlike anything else. Arthur Morgan is one of the best protagonists in modern gaming, full stop. The online mode can be ignored entirely. The single-player campaign is why this game exists.

I spent a lot of hours on RDR2 just riding my horse through the mountains with nowhere particular to be. That is the thing about this game that the trailers never quite capture: it rewards slowness. The world is dense in a way that feels genuinely alive rather than artificially stocked. I have ridden through a thunderstorm in the Grizzlies, stumbled onto a stranger encounter that unfolded over three in-game days, and spent an entire evening just fishing. The controls feel a little stiff by today's standards and the opening is slow, but once it opens up, it is one of the richest solo experiences you will find on any platform at any price.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the few games I have actively slowed down to enjoy. Not because the story demanded it, but because the world kept producing things I had not asked for: a stranger with a bad plan, an egret standing perfectly still in the morning fog, a campfire conversation I stumbled into by accident. I finished RDR1 years ago and came into the sequel with some expectations. It exceeded all of them on atmosphere and surprised me on story. The pacing is slow by design, and if you need constant mission momentum to stay engaged you will feel it by chapter three. For everyone else, this is the most convincing living world games have produced.

I can lose a full evening to Red Dead 2 without touching a single story mission. Just riding through the mountains watching weather roll in, stopping at a camp fire, watching a stranger's encounter play out. Rockstar built a world that rewards existing in it. The campaign is a proper slow-burn western drama that gets better the more you give it, and the sheer scale of it makes the subscription feel genuinely worthwhile just for this one title. It is not a fast game. If you want something you can pick up for twenty minutes and feel satisfied, look elsewhere. But if you have the time, nothing else on this list gives you more world to get lost in.
