Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is the Fallout game I actually finished. I know that says something unflattering about me, given New Vegas sits above it on this list, but the smoother shooting, cleaner presentation, and the sheer density of the Commonwealth map made it easier to live in for extended sessions. The RPG depth is genuinely shallower than New Vegas: the dialogue system is more limited, faction choices carry less weight, and build specialisation matters less. What it does well is loot-and-explore momentum, the kind where you tell yourself one more building and it is suddenly 1 AM. The next-gen update improved performance on modern hardware. For someone new to Fallout who wants to start somewhere approachable rather than somewhere demanding, this is the answer.

Fallout 4 gets more criticism than it deserves as an RPG, usually from people comparing it to Fallout: New Vegas. Fair point, the dialogue system is simpler and the faction choices are less morally complex. But the SPECIAL build system, the settlement crafting, the weapon modification loop, and the sheer density of the Commonwealth as an exploration space add up to something that takes real, enjoyable hours to exhaust. The current-gen update means it runs cleanly on PS5. Through PS Plus you are getting a massive content package with zero additional outlay, and a post-apocalyptic open world that still rewards going off the marked path. It lands at ten because the quest writing is inconsistent, not because the game is not worth your time.

The Commonwealth is the most comfortable Bethesda sandbox for handheld play that most people have not revisited recently. I went back to Fallout 4 on Deck expecting the rougher edges to show their age, and instead I found myself three hours into a settlement I had not planned to build, listening to Diamond City Radio, and completely losing track of time. The V.A.T.S. combat translates well to controller, the map is dense with things worth investigating, and the save-anywhere structure means no interrupted session costs you real progress. It does not have The Witcher 3's writing or Elden Ring's world design, but as a pick-up-and-explore experience on portable hardware, it earns its spot comfortably.

Fallout 4 is a long, systems-heavy post-apocalyptic sandbox that is deeply rewarding for the right player and genuinely frustrating for everyone else. The Commonwealth is full of environmental storytelling, every ruined building has a terminal log or a skeleton that implies a small tragedy, and that kind of discovery loop can keep you going for a hundred hours. It missed the top 10 because its onboarding is rough even by Bethesda standards, the settlement building system is more tedious than fun, and technically it is showing its age more than Skyrim does. If you loved Fallout 3 or New Vegas, this is essential. If you are new to the series, start with Skyrim first.
