Hello Kitty Island Adventure

It's a little embarrassing to admit how much I enjoyed Hello Kitty Island Adventure. But here we are. If you've got young kids, this is a genuinely lovely game to play together, gentle exploration, friendship quests, a whole island of Sanrio characters who just want help with small favors. The catch is the multiplayer: it's online only, which means you actually need two Switches and two copies rather than passing a controller across the couch. That's a real barrier for a family that just wants to sit together and play. Worth it if you've already got the hardware and a Sanrio-curious kid in the house.

Do not let the Sanrio branding fool you into thinking this is shallow. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a more structured cozy game than Animal Crossing, built around character quests, crafting, and gentle exploration rather than open-ended island decoration. It gives you things to actually do without ever making any of them feel urgent. The characters have personality. The world is bright and inviting. My kids spotted it on the Switch eShop and I installed it expecting to uninstall it within a week. Still on the console. It found the gap between Animal Crossing's freeform dailies and a light adventure game, and it fills that gap well.

This one surprised me. The branding made me expect something thin and aimed purely at very young players, but the actual game is more structured than it looks. You are collecting items, building friendships, exploring different island areas, and completing quests, all without a single moment of real pressure. My wife watched me play this for about twenty minutes and asked what it was. That almost never happens with games I have on screen. No combat whatsoever, no timer, no failure state worth mentioning. It is bright and warm in a way that does not feel hollow, and the PS5 version is clean and responsive from the couch.
