I've played nearly every mainline Pokémon game since the Game Boy Color, and Unite is a strange but functional detour from that formula. It's a MOBA, ten-minute matches, controller-friendly, and it plays better on Switch than most competitive shooters manage. Unlocking new Pokémon takes a while without spending. That's the real catch. The core matches don't feel pay-to-win once you're actually in them. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who wants a traditional Pokémon game, but as a quick competitive session between other things, it holds up better than I expected.
