I went straight into Below Zero after finishing the original and felt the difference within the first twenty minutes: it's colder, more guided, and noticeably less awe-inducing than diving into open ocean for the first time not knowing what's down there. Oxygen, temperature, and crafting are all still here doing real work, and the arctic setting gives it its own identity rather than just reskinning the original. It missed the ranked list because Subnautica already claimed the top spot. It does the exploration dread better. Worth playing regardless if you loved the first one and want more of that specific tension, just don't expect it to top what came before.

Open world action-adventure survival game, set on an alien planet, in which the player's character must catalogue all the lifeforms on the planet, while collecting resources and facing alien threats. The player's character has to hunt alien life forms, sometimes using blades or a drill arm to attack them. Although wounds are not shown, blood is depicted and alien bodies are left behind to be harvested. The aliens may grunt and squeal as they struggle to escape. Larger alien creatures also hunt and consume smaller lifeforms, shaking them in their jaws before swallowing them whole. The creatures are also able to hunt and attack the player's character. When caught, the player's character screams and struggles in the creature's mouth before being swallowed. These scenes can be intense and add to the sense of dread created as you explore the planet alone.
