Wreckfest

Wreckfest is a LAN party staple in my group. We've had it running on a folding table more times than I can count. There's no split-screen, so it's not a couch game, but network four laptops together and something clicks that nothing else on this list replicates. The crash physics are the whole point. Panels crumple, wheels detach, engines catch fire mid-corner, and every hit changes how the car handles afterward. My favorite moment, every session, is the whole group quietly agreeing to gang up on whoever is leading. Not subtle. If your idea of a good racing night involves more contact than corners, this is the one game here built entirely around that idea.

The honest case for the original Wreckfest is that it is more complete and more proven than its sequel right now. Private server setup is straightforward, the race format is immediately readable, and years of updates mean the balance is solid in a way early-access games cannot always match. My group ran a full Wreckfest tournament bracket at a session a while back and it was one of the cleaner evenings we have had. The only reason it sits here instead of the main list is that Wreckfest 2 is the current release, and this article is supposed to point people forward. But if you already own it, there is no reason to upgrade immediately.

Wreckfest is the game I'd probably swap in for FlatOut 2 if I were building this list from scratch today, since it does the same demolition-derby job with cleaner modern presentation. Cars deform realistically, races are chaotic in a way that's easy to follow even if you're just watching over someone's shoulder, and it's a game people actually still buy and update in 2026 rather than tracking down an old install disc for. What keeps it in honorable mentions rather than the main ten is that it's covering ground FlatOut 2 already holds on this list, and I didn't want two demolition racers crowding out other genres. Worth owning either way.
