Best Survival Games on Game Pass

Most survival lists let anything with a hunger bar through the door. I don't. To me, survival means resource management: the oxygen gauge ticking down while you are still 40 metres from the habitat, or a cold night with one match left. That is the standard here. Zombies alone don't qualify, and neither does a shooter with a crafting menu. What's left is a Game Pass shortlist where staying alive is the actual game.

I scored each game on survival loop strength first, then overall quality, Game Pass value, playstyle variety, onboarding, and current support. Survival pressure carried the most weight.

Quick Picks

The Top 10 Best Survival Games on Game Pass

Ten picks, ordered by how much real survival pressure they carry and how well they hold up across a long run of evenings.

I put Grounded first because it is the one I would hand to someone who has never touched a survival game. You are shrunk to ant size in a backyard, hunger and thirst tick along, and the lawn is full of things that want to eat you. The spider is the early filter. On the S95F the garden looks like a toy catalogue come to life, and the base-building and armour crafting give each evening a clear next goal. Veterans may find it gentler than the picks below. Solo works fine and co-op is optional, but the survival pressure never fades into decoration.

No Man's Sky sits second on value and variety, not purity. The survival layer is real. Toxic and freezing planets drain your hazard protection, and the first hours are a scramble for resources to keep suit and ship running. Once the basics are covered, though, it shifts toward discovery and base-building, and the pressure eases. I dip into it in short evening bursts because one planet hop fits an hour. Few games in the catalogue hand you this much scale for the price of the subscription, and the years of updates show. It is a hybrid. That is why it is not first.

I loved the first Subnautica, so I came to the sequel with high hopes. It has been in Game Preview on Game Pass for a few months now, and it looks very, very good. To me this is what survival means: oxygen draining while you weigh one more resource node against the long swim back. Nothing else on this list makes a single dive feel that tense. It is still unfinished, so systems and content will keep shifting, and that is the only reason it sits third instead of first. Co-op is there if you want company.

Picture a blizzard rolling in while you are a long walk from the nearest cabin, with one match left in your pocket. That is a normal evening in The Long Dark. Hunger, thirst, warmth and fatigue all pull at you at once, and wolves punish bad planning. It scores highest on survival pressure of anything here. I play it with the lights low and nothing else competing for my attention, because it asks for that. It is single-player only and deliberately slow, which is why it ranks fourth and not higher for a casual subscriber.

Best Co-Op Games on Game Pass

I expected a meme and got a base-building game that quietly eats my evenings. Palworld hides a real survival loop under the creature-collecting. Hunger, gathering and combat risk keep you busy early, then automation takes over as your captured creatures haul and craft for you. After years of mainline Pokémon, the catching felt familiar and the factory-building was the surprise. It plays broader than a pure survival game, and the pressure fades once your base runs itself. That is why it lands fifth. On Game Pass, though, the tinkering tail is enormous.

Surviving a science facility full of anomalies is not what I expected from a survival-crafting game, and that is the appeal. You scavenge office supplies and lab junk, improvise tools, and carve out a shelter while managing basic needs and things that really do not like you. After a long run of forests and deserts it is a welcome change of setting. My regular group is the first place I would take it, since the systems reward people who talk and share. The menus are busy and the early hours are fiddly. Give it a few sessions.

I am wary of survival games that behave like MMOs, so I came in cautious. Arrakis made me reconsider. Water is the whole currency: every drop matters, exposure punishes you for wandering unprepared, and shelter and crafting give you a footing in a hostile desert. The survival pressure stays consistent, which is not a given in games this big. The catch is the structure. It leans on online play and long progression, and that is a lot to ask of weeknight evenings. Strong, but not the cleanest.

If you are looking for fear as the main hook rather than resource pressure, check out our Best Horror Games on Game Pass guide.

This is the one I reach for when I want to switch off and still feel busy. You land on a dead planet, keep your oxygen up, and slowly terraform it, watching the world turn greener as your machines do the work. The resource chains are clear, the goals are readable, and nothing punishes you for stepping away. As terraforming progresses the early squeeze eases, so it is lower stakes than the picks above. That suits a tired evening. It is not a test of nerves.

Terraria is here as the variety pick, and I would rather say that out loud. It is a wonderful game, but the survival pressure is moderate. You prepare for bosses and dig into hostile caves, yet you are rarely at risk of simply running out of food and warmth. What it gives you is polish and sheer hours of content, on console Game Pass, with local and online play. I would pull it out for a friends' night before I would pull it out for survival. It sits ninth because the pressure is lighter.

Zombies alone do not make a survival game for me. Resource upkeep does, and State of Decay 2 is built on it. You manage a community of survivors, keep morale up, ration supplies, send people out to scavenge, and defend a base where a lost companion stays lost. Permadeath makes the losses sting. That is why the Juggernaut Edition qualifies on a list that is not about zombies. The action is the framing, not the point, and the framing is why it lands last. It earns its place by being about upkeep, not undead.

Honorable Mentions

These five are real survival games that missed the top ten for specific reasons, and each has a reader it suits.

Astroneer is the survival game I would pitch to my wife. She stayed with It Takes Two because it was colourful, readable and kind to beginners, and Astroneer shares that approach. You tether to oxygen, reshape terrain with a tool that feels like play, and slowly build out a base on a bright planet. It just does not push hard enough on survival to crack the top ten. The threat is mild. If you are new to the genre, it is a friendly first step before anything in the harder half of this list.

ARK is survival at its most demanding. Hunger, hostile dinosaurs, base sieges and a taming system that wants hours, all stacked on top of each other. The survival fit is undeniable, but the onboarding is rough and the friction is high. I look at the time it asks for and know my evenings cannot pay it. Players who want depth above all will find plenty. It missed the top ten because polish and approachability lag behind the modern picks, and because a game on this list should not feel like homework.

Once Human is an online survival shooter, and the online part decides it. The connection is required, so I cannot start a session on a whim the way I can with The Long Dark or Grounded. The crafting, base setup and territory pressure are strong enough to count as survival, and the hostile world has real teeth. It missed the top ten because of that dependency and its shooter-heavy lean. If your group already lives in a persistent online world, it is worth a download.

Frostpunk 2 turns survival into triage. You are keeping a whole city alive against the cold, so every law and every heating decision costs someone something. It is the best management-leaning survival game in the catalogue, and the entire premise is staying alive. It stayed outside the top ten because it is PC only on Game Pass, and my survival evenings happen on the Series X. If you play on PC and prefer strategy over action, it deserves a look ahead of several back-half picks.

Medieval Dynasty is the slow one. You hunt, farm, chop wood, watch the weather and gradually grow a village, and the days run on routine more than danger. I like that rhythm for evenings when I want to be busy without being chased. The survival identity is real, with food, warmth and shelter all in play. But it is less exciting than the headliners, and the early game is a lot of walking and gathering. Patience pays. It missed the top ten on thrill, not on substance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few things subscribers ask before downloading a survival game they might spend dozens of evenings on.

Is Subnautica 2 a finished game on Game Pass?

No. It is available in Game Preview, which means you can play it now but systems and content are still being developed. Expect changes between sessions, and keep that in mind if you prefer polished, finished releases.

What is the best survival game on Game Pass for beginners?

Grounded is the easiest way in. The tutorials are clear, the threats are readable, and the pressure builds gradually. The Planet Crafter and the honorable mention Astroneer are good follow-ups if you want something equally forgiving.

Do I need a specific Game Pass tier to play these?

It varies. As of writing, Grounded, No Man's Sky and State of Decay 2 are listed from Essential upward, while The Long Dark, Subnautica 2 and Palworld start at Premium or PC Game Pass. Catalogues rotate, so check the Game Pass page before you commit.

Is a zombie game like State of Decay 2 really survival?

Only when the zombies are not the whole point. State of Decay 2 qualifies because upkeep, morale, scavenging and permadeath drive everything you do. A game where you just shoot waves of undead does not make this list.

Which of these can I play offline and solo?

The Long Dark and Grounded are the cleanest solo picks, and neither needs a connection to play. Most others offer single-player with optional online features. Once Human is the exception, since it requires an online connection, and Dune: Awakening leans on online play as well.

Conclusion

Survival on Game Pass is stronger than most subscribers give it credit for. Grounded is the safe start, Subnautica 2 is the one I am most excited about, and The Long Dark is still the standard for pure pressure.
