Gears 5 splits three ways for campaign co-op, one more player than most shooters bother supporting locally. Horde mode is the one I keep returning to, and it's the closest thing on this list to my Helldivers 2 sessions, just without headsets, everyone reacting to the same wave on the same screen. It takes patience, though. New players need a session or two before Horde stops being a slaughter. Once it clicks, this is one of the most reliable action picks on Xbox for a couch night.

Gears has always been Xbox's answer to a console-defining third-person shooter, and Gears 5 is still the cleanest version of that pitch. I ran Horde with a friend back on the original release, trading engineer duty between waves, and the format holds up exactly the same way today. Five players hold a shrinking position against fifty waves of Locust, building fortifications between rounds with scavenged scrap. It scales the way good co-op should: a coordinated group plays completely differently from four strangers holding angles on instinct, but neither approach is unplayable. The population has thinned since launch. Matches take longer to fill than they used to, but Horde nights with a full squad are still some of the best co-op shooting on Xbox.
Gears 5 covers a lot of ground for a duo: campaign co-op, versus modes, Horde. The full package. It sits outside the top ten mainly because the MCC covers similar shooter-plus-campaign territory with more breadth, and Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 handle the competitive side more cleanly. As a pure Xbox-native shooter for two people who want both story and competition, Gears 5 is a completely solid pick and available on Game Pass, which removes most of the barrier. If you have been through the MCC and want something more modern, this is the natural next stop.
Gears 5 is the most Xbox-native game on this list in the best sense. It runs beautifully on the platform, it has a full campaign you can play through in co-op from start to finish, and then Horde mode is waiting when you want something to replay with the same group. It is not the newest recommendation here, and the campaign is not going to surprise anyone who has played a Gears game before. What it is, is one of the cleanest and most complete co-op shooter packages on Xbox. I have run through parts of the campaign twice in co-op and Horde mode is the kind of thing you can drop into for an evening without any preamble. Reliable is underrated.
