Helldivers 2 is the group favourite in my regular squad, and it earns that spot by being almost aggressively about teamwork. Friendly fire is on by default, which means half our early sessions ended with someone apologizing for an orbital strike gone wrong. Crossplay across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC is dead simple, no separate friend codes or platform gatekeeping, just an invite and you're dropping into the same warzone. The missions run twenty-five to forty minutes, short enough for a weeknight, chaotic enough that you will need a headset to actually call out bug breaches in time. It rewards squads who talk. Solo queuing works in a pinch, but it is not the same game.

Helldivers 2 is my group's go-to online game, and it earned that spot by making coordination feel necessary rather than optional. We run it with headsets most weekends, calling out Bile Titans and stratagem drops over voice chat, and the moment a friendly orbital strike lands two metres from your own position and wipes half the squad, everyone loses it laughing instead of getting angry. That's rare in online shooters. The third-person shooting itself is genuinely good on its own merits, not just a vehicle for co-op chaos, with weapons that have real recoil and enemies that react to where you hit them. It needs other people to be at its best, though solo runs hold up fine.
Helldivers 2 is the game my group actually plays every week, headsets on. It's earned that spot honestly. The friendly fire is real: someone calls in an airstrike a beat too early and wipes half the squad, and somehow that's funnier than it is frustrating once you've been on the receiving end a few times. Stratagem calls demand real coordination, not four people just shooting in the same direction, which is exactly the kind of teamwork that makes scheduling everyone's evening worth it. The game has had server hiccups, most live-service titles do, but there's no sign of it winding down. If your group already has this on rotation, nothing else on this list needs to bump it.
This is the game my regular group has logged the most hours in over the past year. PS5 and PC, headsets on, someone always calling in a Stratagem at the wrong moment and landing an orbital strike on the teammate they were trying to save. That is the Helldivers 2 experience and I mean that as a compliment. It is a shooter-first co-op game where the shooting actually feels good, which is rarer than it sounds. The crossplay is limited to PS5 and PC, so if half your group is on Xbox you will need to look elsewhere. For the groups it fits, though, nothing else on this list delivers the same combination of chaos, teamwork, and mission-to-mission replayability.
Helldivers 2 is the game my online group plays most on PS5 with headsets, and the co-op energy is genuinely excellent. On Steam Deck the picture is more complicated. Performance requires settings compromises, the HUD is a bit dense at handheld resolution, and the experience is just less effortless than the top picks here. If you are playing at a desk with the Deck docked, the gap closes. Purely handheld, though, it sits below Deep Rock Galactic in terms of comfort. Still one of the best co-op shooters available on Steam, and if you can work around the Deck limitations it is absolutely worth your time.
Helldivers 2 is my most-played PS5 game of the last two years, and it earned that by being genuinely better with a headset and people you actually know. Calling in a stratagem orbital strike while your squadmate is still standing in the target zone never gets old. The missions are tight enough to finish in 30 minutes, which matters on a weeknight when you have maybe 90 minutes before responsible adult life reasserts itself. Gunplay is satisfying, the enemy design creates real emergencies, and the cooperative pressure is baked in at every level. It has had rough patches with the live-service management side of things, but in 2026 it remains the benchmark for what a PS5 co-op shooter should feel like.
This is the game my regular group kept coming back to long after the launch hype faded, which tells you more about it than any review score. Four-player missions where friendly fire is always on and someone always accidentally calls a stratagem on top of the squad sounds chaotic on paper. In practice, with a group you actually know and a headset on, it is some of the most engaged I have been in an online session in years. The missions run long enough to feel substantial but short enough to fit a weeknight. My one honest caveat: matchmaking with strangers is noticeably less reliable than with a fixed group, and balance patches have occasionally shifted difficulty in ways that frustrated the community. Go in with friends.
We play Helldivers 2 with headsets. That is not optional phrasing, it is a practical note. The stratagem system, where you call in airstrikes and resupply drops using directional inputs that you are trying to complete while being chased by a Charger, creates a constant stream of things to shout across a voice channel. The friendly fire is real and the moments where a teammate orbital strikes directly on top of the group are some of the funniest things I have had in co-op gaming in years. PS5 and PC crossplay is confirmed. No couch mode. Servers are healthy as of early 2026 and Arrowhead keeps updating. Four players online, missions run about twenty minutes, and the whole thing rewards groups who actually communicate.
Helldivers 2 might be the best pure co-op game released in years. The four-player squad format, drop-in matchmaking, friendly fire, and chaotic stratagems create situations no other game produces, moments that turn into stories you tell afterward. I played a session where we accidentally called an orbital strike on our own extraction zone with ten seconds left. We still talk about it. There's no PvP, no local co-op, and the difficulty ramps fast enough that solo queue can be rough when teammates don't coordinate. But with a regular group of three or four? It's nearly unbeatable.
Helldivers 2 sits at the top because nothing else on PS5 makes three or four players feel as deliberately designed-for as this does. Stratagems naturally split between your squad — one player calls in airstrikes, another handles resupply, someone else drops the heavy mech — and it all clicks without anyone needing to announce a role. Missions run 20–40 minutes, which is the sweet spot for a regular session. The one real catch is that it's online-only and needs PS Plus, so purely local squads are out. PS5/PC crossplay via PSN is a genuine advantage for mixed-platform groups.
Helldivers 2 is partial crossplay — Xbox doesn't exist in this game's universe — but PS5 and PC Steam co-op works well, and the co-op design itself is one of the best on this list. Four players calling in Stratagems, managing friendly fire, and coordinating planetary liberation missions creates a tension that most games only approach. Arrowhead has continued supporting it through 2025 and into 2026. The PSN account requirement for PC players was controversial at launch and worth checking current regional status before your PC friends buy in. For a PS5-and-PC group wanting the most talked-about co-op of the last couple of years, it's still the answer.
Helldivers 2 is the most chaotic, coordinated, and laugh-out-loud co-op PS5 has right now. Calling in a Stratagem while your teammate accidentally walks into its drop zone is the whole game. Four players, all with different loadouts, navigating objectives under fire while the friendly-fire system keeps everyone honest—it clicks in a way that few games manage. Cross-play means PS5 and PC friends can squad up without issue. The living Galactic War adds a community layer that makes individual missions feel connected to something bigger. The one caveat: server stability had rough patches at launch, and matchmaking can still hiccup during peak hours.
