Skyrim has been released so many times that it became a meme, and yet here I am recommending it again. It belongs because the fantasy sandbox it built in 2011 still works. You wander off the main path, stumble into a Dwemer ruin, spend three hours there, and emerge with no idea where you were originally going. That loop holds. The Switch port is comfortable, stable, and well-suited to short handheld sessions where you just want to pick up a quest and exist in a world for an hour. It is not the most technically sophisticated game on this list by a long margin, but it is one of the most naturally free-roaming things you can play on Switch.

This game features frequent depictions of gross violence towards human-like characters. As the player you are able to decapitate and dismember humans, all these attacks are paired with strong blood/gore. The same gross violence can be inflicted onto multiple innocent civilians, with the exception of children who take no damage from attacks. In some quests there are depictions of violence to the vulnerable and innocent, for example, there is a quest where the player is told to kill one of three humans, one of them is a criminal and the others two are innocent, all three are tied up with bags on their head, as the player you have the ability to kill all three regardless of their innocence.

Skyrim is fifteen years old and it still does one thing better than almost anything else on this list: it makes you feel like the world was there before you arrived and will carry on after you leave. You can join a guild, ignore the main quest for thirty hours, and the game does not punish you for it or nudge you back. The Anniversary Edition is the version to get, though the mod situation on console is genuinely useful if you want quality-of-life improvements. The combat has not aged well, and anyone coming from Elden Ring will find it flat. But as a place to inhabit and wander, Skyrim remains one of the most forgiving and inviting open worlds ever built.
