Best Multiplayer Games

Most of my gaming life has been scheduled around other people. LAN parties with the same group of friends for as long as I can remember, and on weekday evenings there is almost always someone online to join. That is why I care less about what a multiplayer game scores in a trailer and more about whether it still gets played three years later. This list covers co-op and versus, online and local, and every game on it earns its evenings.

Multiplayer is the wide term and co-op is just one corner of it, so this list mixes both. Three things decide what suits your group. First, same side or opposite sides: co-op builds stories, versus builds grudges. Second, how many of you play regularly, since some games need a full squad of four and others scale to anyone. Third, how much onboarding your friends will put up with. Fortnite takes five minutes. Counter-Strike 2 takes a month.

Quick Picks

The Top 10 Best Multiplayer Games

These ten cover co-op, versus and sandbox play, from games you can learn in five minutes to ones that ask for a month.

Fortnite is the obvious choice, and for once the obvious choice is correct. On nights when my group cannot agree on anything, it is the download nobody vetoes, because one install covers battle royale, Zero Build, LEGO survival, a racing mode and a long shelf of creator-made islands. All free. The player base is big enough that a match starts in seconds at almost any hour, and the amount of content you get without paying still surprises me. The store is loud about cosmetics, and the building side punishes anyone who skipped the early seasons. Zero Build is the gentler way in.

I play Minecraft with my kids one evening and with my friends the next, and it holds up both times. With the kids it is a shared house and an alarming number of chickens. With the friends it turns into a survival project and a storage room that is far too well organised. Realms, servers and local play on console all work, so setup is rarely the obstacle. Direction is. Nothing in the game tells you what tonight is for, so a group without one person who likes projects tends to wander. Replayability is bottomless.

The hype has faded. The game has not. Rocket League is a five-minute match you can follow after watching a single goal, which makes it the easiest way to start a rivalry with someone who barely plays. Split-screen against a friend gets loud quickly, and in online teams it behaves like co-op, with rotations and passes you actually have to call. The skill ceiling sits somewhere above the clouds. I still cannot explain half the aerials I see in replays, and it has never mattered for how much I enjoy a night of it. Ranked is where it turns sweaty.

Helldivers 2 is where my group learned to fear our own airstrikes. Four of us on headsets, one calling out Stratagem inputs, another standing exactly where the orbital beam is about to land. Friendly fire is the engine of the whole thing, and it makes every mission a story you retell the next time everyone is online. It does need real coordination. Strangers without mics get you a lonelier, quieter version of the game, and there is no local option. Reinforcing a squadmate who died to your own grenade is a feeling you learn to live with.

Best Co-Op Games to Play in 2026

The Scout lights the cave, the Engineer drops platforms, the Driller tunnels through, the Gunner lays a zipline, and any missing class gets felt within minutes. When Helldivers 2 starts to feel familiar, this is where my group lands, and it asks for even more teamwork. The caves are procedural, so no run repeats. Online play for four is the only mode, and the first couple of runs are mostly learning what your class is for. Stick with it. By the third session you will be shouting 'Rock and Stone' without irony.

A galleon needs one person steering, one on the sails, one bailing water and one shouting about the ship on the horizon. That chaos is the whole point. On headsets, my group has had a calm treasure run turn into a chase more than once, and those are the sessions we still bring up. The group-versus-group part is what separates it from a plain co-op sandbox, since another crew can appear at any moment and turn your haul into a target. Played alone, it is slow and lonely, and the quiet stretches between events can drag. Bring a crew.

Counter-Strike is a LAN party staple for us. We put absurd hours into Source and moved to CS2 without a single meeting about it. Five against five, one bomb, rounds that rarely last longer than two minutes, and an economy that forces you to decide every time whether to buy or save. It is not forgiving. Matchmaking with strangers can turn sour, and a newcomer will lose a lot before the maps start making sense. Learn them in an empty server before you queue.

I went in expecting a Marvel skin on a hero shooter formula I already knew. I stayed for the maps. Walls come down, floors collapse, and a charge from a big hero can reshape a fight mid-capture. It is six against six, split between Vanguard, Duelist and Strategist roles, with team-up abilities that reward picking heroes in pairs. Free to play, with queues that stay busy. Solo queue is a lottery, though, and one team without a healer ruins the match for everyone. Go in with at least one friend.

I come to VALORANT as a Counter-Strike person, which means I keep reaching for a grenade when I should be pressing an ability key. Agents bring kits like Sage's heals and Jett's dashes, so rounds have more moving parts and more ways to rescue a bad play. The structure is the same 5v5 bomb game. The pure aim test is not. Ranked is steady and the community is large, but a casual group will find it harder to slot into than a mixed-skill game. Expect to spend your first week learning what each agent can do to you.

Hunt, carve, craft, hunt again. That loop is why Monster Hunter Wilds works with a group, and it is the only gear grind I do not resent. I usually skip anything that pads its runtime with busywork, but here the grind is the fight, so it never feels like homework. Four hunters, one huge monster, and an argument two hours in about whether the new armour set matters more than a new weapon. The weak spot is onboarding. You have to learn a weapon before the fun fully arrives, and the menus explain less than they should. Pick one weapon and stay with it.

Honorable Mentions

Five more games that are good enough to recommend, each held back by overlap with a stronger pick or by a narrower audience.

I grew up on Mortal Kombat, so I walked into Street Fighter 6 expecting a steep climb. Modern controls put specials on a single button, and the Battle Hub lets you wander in, find a match and leave without a lobby. A friend who had not played a fighter in years took a round off me on his second night. One-on-one play suits two people at a time, which is what kept it off the main list. Fighting games still reward practice, and this one tells you what you did wrong. Local versus is where I would start.

For two players, I would put Split Fiction above anything else I have played. Each chapter drops you into a new sci-fi or fantasy world and swaps your abilities, so the second player is never along for the ride. It runs online or on one couch. Two seats is the limit, and that is what kept it out of the main ranking, since a table of four has nothing to do. It also lacks the replay pull of Minecraft. Bring a controller for your co-pilot and expect the genre to flip without warning.

My Game Boy Color days left me with a weak spot for anything where you collect creatures, so Palworld's pitch got me. You catch Pals. They haul, mine and craft while you build the base. The first evening with a group is usually one person assigning Pals to jobs while everyone else argues about where the walls go. It is rougher than Minecraft, and the teamwork is mostly parallel rather than tightly coordinated, which kept it out of the top ten. Crossplay and dedicated servers make joining simple. Give the group an evening to settle on who does what.

Warzone overlaps with Fortnite in the big-lobby lane without matching its variety, which kept it just short of the main list. I have always shown up to Call of Duty multiplayer behind everyone who skipped the campaign, and Warzone is no kinder about it. Large squads, a big map and gunplay that feels better than almost anything else in the genre. Resurgence trims the map and lets you respawn, which suits a shorter evening. Lobbies can be sweaty. Pick it if your group already lives in Call of Duty.

Apex's movement is the part I never mastered. My slides still end up pointed the wrong way, and I have accepted that. Everything else holds up: squads of three, Legends with abilities like Pathfinder's grapple and Wraith's portals, and fights that move vertically instead of sitting behind cover. It missed the main list because Fortnite covers battle royale more broadly and the Switch version is being shut down. A well-timed grapple into a squad fight still feels great. Movement fans should give it an evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions I get most from friends who are trying to pick a game for the next group night.

What is the best multiplayer game for a mix of kids and adults?

Minecraft is the one I reach for, because it works for my kids and my friends alike and nobody gets eliminated. Fortnite is the free alternative, and its Zero Build mode is a gentler way in for anyone who does not want to build under pressure.

Which games on this list are free to play?

Fortnite, Rocket League, Counter-Strike 2, Marvel Rivals and VALORANT are all free to download. Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends, in the honorable mentions, are free as well. The rest are premium purchases.

What works best at a LAN party?

Counter-Strike 2 is our long-running staple, and it rewards a group that already knows each other. If you would rather share a room and a screen, Rocket League and Minecraft both support local multiplayer.

Do I need friends to enjoy these games?

Not for all of them. Fortnite, Rocket League, Marvel Rivals, Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT match you with strangers without much fuss. Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Sea of Thieves and Monster Hunter Wilds are far better with a regular group on voice chat.

Which games suit a short weeknight session?

Rocket League matches run about five minutes, Counter-Strike 2 rounds rarely pass two, and a Fortnite match is over before the kettle cools. Monster Hunter Wilds and Deep Rock Galactic take longer per run, but you can stop after one.

How were these games ranked?

I scored every game on multiplayer quality, social fun, broad appeal, longevity and current support. Multiplayer quality carried the most weight, with broad appeal close behind, because a list like this should hold up for a reader who has no idea what they want yet. Support mattered least, but a quiet server still costs a game points.

Conclusion

Ten games, two families of multiplayer, and no single winner for every table. Fortnite and Minecraft are the easy yeses, Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic reward a squad, and Counter-Strike 2 is for the group that wants to get good. Start with the game your most reluctant friend will install. A multiplayer game is only as good as the group you can get into it.

If you already know your console, our best multiplayer PS5 games, Xbox multiplayer and Nintendo Switch multiplayer lists narrow things down.
